Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are one of the most versatile and impactful treatments in cosmetic dentistry. A single set of veneers can address multiple concerns, creating a result that looks natural and lasts for many years. Dr. Tara Carroll enjoys the process of transforming smiles, bringing clinical precision and a passion for aesthetics to every veneer case.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of dental ceramic bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It covers imperfections and improves the tooth’s appearance without removing more structure than necessary. Because we match the material to the shade and translucency of natural teeth, the result is a seamless appearance that looks like your smile.

To be a good veneers candidate, you must have healthy teeth and gums, so we must resolve any underlying issues before proceeding with the treatment. You should also be committed to caring for them properly to protect your investment for the long-term.

What Problems Can Veneers Fix?

Porcelain veneers are effective because they address multiple concerns in a single treatment. Here is what they can improve:
Worn or Chipped Teeth
Teeth that have lost length, shape, or surface from wear, grinding, or chips can be fully restored with veneers for a more uniform appearance.
Deep or Stubborn Staining
Some deep or stubborn stains don’t respond to whitening. Veneers cover these stains completely and permanently, with a color chosen to complement your smile.
Gaps Between Teeth
Veneers close gaps between teeth by slightly widening the appearance of adjacent teeth, achieving in two appointments what might take years with orthodontic treatment.
Uneven Tooth Shape or Size
Teeth that are too small, too short, or irregular in shape can be resized and reshaped with veneers to create better proportion and symmetry for your smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Porcelain veneers are durable and long-lasting, but they require the same consistent care as your natural teeth, with a few additional considerations to protect your investment. With proper maintenance, veneers can last 15 years or longer.

Caring for Your Veneers at Home

  • Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Abrasive formulas can dull the porcelain surface over time.
  • Floss daily, taking care to clean gently along the gum line where the veneer meets the tooth.
  • Avoid using your teeth to open packages, biting your nails, or chewing hard objects like ice or crunchy foods.

Protecting Your Veneers

If you grind or clench your teeth, a custom night guard is one of the best investments you can make. Grinding places significant force on porcelain and is a common cause of veneer damage.

Keeping Your Smile Looking Its Best

Porcelain resists staining well, but can dull over time with heavy coffee, tea, or wine consumption. Routine professional cleanings help maintain the appearance of your veneers and give Dr. Carroll the opportunity to monitor their condition.

What to Expect When Getting Veneers

Once you and Dr. Carroll decide that veneers are the right choice for you, we can typically complete the process in just two visits:

First Visit: Preparing Your Teeth

We prepare the veneer teeth by removing a small, precise amount of enamel from their front surfaces. Next, we take digital impressions and send them to a trusted dental lab that prepares your final veneers. You will receive temporary veneers to protect your teeth and give you a preview of the final result.

Second Visit: Placing Your Veneers

When the permanent veneers are ready, Dr. Carroll checks each for fit, color, and proportion. She adjusts the fit as needed to ensure you can bite comfortably, then cements the veneers securely in place.

The entire process from consultation to final placement typically takes three to four weeks. With proper care, veneers can last 10 years or longer.
