Cleanings and Exams Erie

Professional dental cleanings and exams every six months are the foundation of good oral health. Cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that your daily brushing and flossing cannot. Routine exams give your dentist a chance to catch problems early and provide a clear picture of where your oral health stands.

Dr. Tara Carroll offers thorough checkups every six months that include both cleanings and exams. First, a skilled hygienist performs the cleaning, then Dr. Carroll completes the exam.

A Thorough Teeth Cleaning

The first step is an evaluation where a skilled hygienist looks for signs of decay or gum disease. During your cleaning, they gently remove plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces, especially between teeth where decay commonly develops.

Your hygienist also cleans carefully along the gumline to help prevent disease. Next, they polish your teeth to remove surface stains and leave the enamel feeling clean and smooth. The final step is flossing to remove any debris left behind. If there are signs of gum disease, your hygienist may recommend a deeper cleaning.

Why Regular Cleanings and Exams Matter

Consistent professional care does more than keep teeth clean. Here's how two visits a year can contribute to a healthier smile:
Early Detection Saves Money and Treatment
Small cavities, early gum disease, and developing cracks are far easier and less expensive to treat when caught early. A routine exam is the best and easiest way to find problems before they become more complex to treat.
A Cleaner Mouth Than You Can Achieve at Home
Even excellent oral hygiene habits leave some areas untouched. Professional cleaning removes hardened tartar that brushing cannot address and reduces the bacteria that contribute to decay and gum disease.
A Complete Picture of Your Oral Health
X-rays, a thorough exam, and a conversation with Dr. Carroll give you accurate, current information about the state of your teeth and gums. That information helps you make more informed decisions about your care.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most patients, twice a year is the right schedule. Two visits per year give Dr. Carroll the opportunity to catch problems early, remove buildup before it causes damage, and keep a current picture of your oral health.

Most PPO insurance plans cover two cleanings and exams annually, making this the most cost-effective schedule for most patients.

Why Some Patients Need More Frequent Visits

Not everyone fits the twice-yearly model. Dr. Carroll may recommend visits every three to four months if you have:

  • Active gum disease or a history of periodontal treatment
  • A higher-than-average cavity risk
  • Dry mouth from medications or medical conditions
  • Diabetes or other systemic conditions linked to oral health
  • A history of frequent cavities or infections

Judgment-Free Care

We will never judge you, no matter how long it's been since your last checkup. Dr. Carroll's approach is to assess where your oral health stands today and build a care plan from there. The most important step is simply getting back on track.

What to Expect at Your Dental Exam

  • Discussing Your Concerns: The first step of your exam is a conversation with Dr. Carroll about what you’ve been experiencing with your oral health and if you have any specific concerns.
  • Reviewing X-Rays: Next comes a comprehensive review of your most current x-rays; we may recommend new ones if yours are more than a year old. Dr. Carroll also uses AI-assisted radiograph review. This technology helps identify areas of concern on x-rays, to confirm nothing is missed, and to make it easier for you to understand what the images show.
  • Examining Your Teeth: Dr. Carroll conducts a thorough visual exam using an intraoral camera to check each tooth for signs of decay, cracks, or wear. The images appear in real-time on the chairside monitor so you can follow along, and she can point out any areas of concern. She also evaluates your dental bite and jaw and performs an oral cancer screening.
  • Reviewing Findings: If Dr. Carroll finds anything that needs attention, she explains what it is, why she recommends treating it, and what your options are.
